The Ottawa Hills Fire and Rescue Department is led by Chief James Sedlar, with over 20 years Village service, and is staffed 24 hours per day with 9 full-time firefighters (3 per shift) and a crew of part-time firefighters. All fire department employees are EMT or paramedic trained. When you call 911, our own Dispatch staff will answer the phone. We are proud of our highly-trained professionals, who are well-equipped to provide services to our residents.
Fire Fighting
The Fire Department is dedicated to keeping residents safe. We focus both on fire prevention activities and a high level of training for fire fighting. We work in cooperation with other area fire departments so residents can feel confident that all needed resources will be available in the event of an emergency.
Emergency Medical Services
Emergency medical services are an important part of our job. We have added a Medical Transport Unit which allows us to transport our own residents to the hospital in many cases. Because our response time is very short, our residents benefit from reaching the hospital more quickly.
Other Services
Our Fire Department is here to assist you. If you need a blood pressure check, just stop in. If you think you smell gas, call us and we’ll bring out our “sniffer” to your home. Following is a list of some of our Fire Department services:
| Blood Pressure Checks | Smoke Detector Giveaways |
| Fire Inspections | Fire Station Tours |
| Home Safety Surveys | CPR training for residents |
| Public Education | Shred Day |

Smoke Detectors
OHFD strongly recommends a smoke detector be installed on every level of your home. We have smoke detectors available free of charge if you need them. Please call 419.531.4849 to make arrangements for us to drop them off at your residence.
In addition, we can give you suggestions on where to install them and help with installation. We recommend that you test your smoke detectors at least once a month by pushing the test button. Replace the batteries twice a year. All smoke detectors more than 10 years old should be replaced. We will also replace smoke detector batteries free of charge for those who need it.
